The Masters doesn’t tee off until next weekend, but Saturday felt like moving day on the SEC baseball leaderboard. Contenders became clear. Pretenders became even clearer.

Here’s this weekend in SEC baseball, In Case You Missed It.

Best freshman player in the country, now take out the “freshman” part

Derek Curiel was never going to shy away from the limelight. He was put front and center as a true freshman from day one at LSU. All he’s done is open the season hitting .390 and an on-base percentage of .535 to lead the team.

The Tigers have played 33 games this year. Curiel has reached base in all 33 of those games. It’s the longest streak of any LSU player since 2000 and the longest of any freshman in program history.

Texas Pitching won the weekend

Georgia’s offense has been one of the best, if not the best, in the country all season long. Coming into their weekend series in Austin they scored ten or more runs in 15 of their last 25 games. They were held to just eight all weekend.

Eight.

That’s about as dominant as a pitching staff can be against that lineup. They also held midseason All-American and potential SEC Player of the Year Ryland Zaborowski to just 1-for-10 on the weekend.

Aggies, cue the Undertaker music

I gave up. So did you. We all did.

That’s a loose version of a famous Larry Munson quote about a Georgia football team that came from behind in the most dramatic way possible from my childhood. It fits here.

Texas A&M was left for dead heading to Knoxville. Through half the season’s games, the Aggies had done nothing but underwhelm and disappoint. They came into the weekend 1-8 in SEC play and were walking lifelessly into the buzzsaw that is Tennessee.

No one can be sure what happened on Saturday, but whatever the Aggies did in their pregame routine needs to become a game day tradition the rest of the season. Texas A&M exploded for 26 runs in their two games Saturday and won both. Now the question becomes is it sustainable?
