ICYMI: When trash talk backfires and disaster in CoMo

We start this weekend’s “In Case You Missed It” with story time, boys and girls.
My sophomore year of college, we were No. 1 in the country for Division II baseball and played a road series against No. 7 Francis Marion. They had a righty named Dylan Owen. He had a devastating slider, a rubber arm, and made it to Triple A with the Mets. He threw a complete game and beat us 5-2.
For the record, I was 1-for-1, so it wasn’t my fault. Regardless, after the loss the student section decided to taunt us coming off the field with an “OVER-RATED!” chant. Which is fine. They just beat the No. 1 team in the country and were one of only five teams in the conference to do so that year.
We beat them twice the next day, including a run-rule win. After the final out, we gathered down the right field line for our postgame talk from the coaches. As we got ready to break it down, leave the field, and head home our head coach said, “Oh and by the way. That’s why you don’t talk s–t after game one of a three game series.”
Now let’s get into what you may have missed this weekend in SEC Baseball. Trust me, the story will make more sense in a minute.
Florida Gulf ROASTed
Florida Gulf Coast and Georgia played a three game series this weekend in Athens. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game– thanks in part to a mammoth home run–and were up 5-1 going into the 5th inning.
It was at that moment that whoever was running the FGCU Baseball Twitter account made a critical mistake and decided to taunt No. 6 Georgia with a tweet saying “They supposed to be SEC??”
A lot of things happened in between that tweet and the final out of the series on Sunday. The end result was Georgia sweeping FGCU with two walk-offs and a 10-0 win in seven innings.
Let that be a lesson kids, that’s why you don’t talk s–t five innings into a weekend series against the No. 6 team in the country.

Tennessee is very good
Shocking, we know. Turns out the defending national champions are still really good at baseball. Tennessee played three games in Houston at the Astros Foundation College Classic. They beat two ranked opponents on Friday and Sunday in Oklahoma State and Arizona. In the middle they run-ruled Rice, 13-3.
What was most impressive on the weekend was the Vols pitching staff allowed only six runs all weekend. Liam Doyle has been tremendous to start the year. He’s allowed just one run over 14.2 innings and struck out a ridiculous 34 batters so far. Doyle was once again at his best against Oklahoma State. He only managed to throw 4.1 innings, but he allowed zero runs, just three hits, and struck out nine of the 16 batters he faced.
📈 Liam Doyle is the biggest early season riser for the 2025 draft
• Up to 97.7mph yesterday
• 69% K rate in 3 starts -> that’s 34 Ks in 14.2 innings
• 4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K against OK Statepic.twitter.com/dm9kA5N5fR— Lucas Staggs (@UpsideProspect) March 1, 2025
Missouri might be the worst Power Four team in the country
Missouri baseball isn’t just a train wreck. It’s much worse. On a scale of one-to-Michael Scott in the “Scott’s Tots” episode of The Office, Missouri baseball is an Australian break dancer at the Olympics.
It’s so bad, but you want to keep watching to see how much worse it could possibly get.
This weekend, the Tigers split a four game series with Evansville. The Purple Aces came into the weekend at 1-6 on the year, which included a three game sweep at the hands of Little Rock.
Around the horn in one sentence or less…

- There are still three undefeated teams in the SEC: Alabama, Oklahoma, and Tennessee
- South Carolina loses three straight to Clemson in Paul Mainieri’s first experience in the best rivalry in college baseball
