A big name is about to hit the market and the New Orleans Saints should absolutely be interested. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Green Bay Packers are set to release two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander on Monday.

There are rarely players of Alexander’s caliber that hit the open market at this point in the offseason. He’s a lockdown, outside cornerback that would be an upgrade for just about any NFL team.
The Saints have a strong, though underrated, cornerback room that they would be perfectly comfortable going into the season with, but adding Alexanders would make the unit undeniably stout.
Second-year cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry is set to be one of the starting outside corners. He’s a fundamentally sound and physical boundary coverage player. Isaac Yiadom is currently expected to be his counterpart on the outside. Yiadom had a fantastic year with the Saints in 2023 because of his strong coverage abilities downfield.
Meanwhile, the Saints have one of their best defensive weapons in the slot with fourth-year cornerback Alontae Taylor.
Adding Alexander to the room would likely create competition for Yiadom and set the Saints up to have a very deep cornerback room.
The 28-year-old cornerback will have a lot of options in free agency. But for the first time in a while, the Saints have the money to be competitive. They currently sit with nearly $30 million of available salary cap space, allowing them to separate themselves from the pack if needed with a financial boost.
The Saints have already impressed with defensive back additions like safety Justin Reid, who chose New Orleans over the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.
If the Saints are looking to continue upgrading their secondary, which they have already shown some interest in by hosting cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. weeks ago, Alexander would be a worthwhile investment.
New Orleans would be wise to safeguard itself in the contract, should Alexander be a true target and wind up signing with the team. He has appeared in just seven games in each of the last two seasons and was available for only four in 2021.
If the Saints can get a contract done that includes some playing time incentives to help protect against missed time, Alexander should absolutely be in its sights.
