The New Orleans Saints have their next head coach in former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Fresh off of a Super Bowl victory, Moore joins the Saints as their next standard bearer and leader. But before the job, before the championship, and even before becoming college football’s winningest quarterback in history, Moore was ready for this moment.

At the young age of just 17, Moore was visited by Boise State on a recruiting visit. Instead of Moore focusing solely on his opportunity as a quarterback, he showed his recruiters something different: a centimeters-thick playbook that he designed

The 17 year old recruit had collected plays for many years from his father, a high school coach, playbooks he had purchased online, and likely some that he’d drawn up himself over the years.

Moore spoke during Super Bowl week about keeping his mind open to where he might find the next exciting play to add to his system. With social media having grown since that recruiting trip, he’s taken some things he’s seen online and implemented them into his previous offenses as well.

“You can find clips of high school teams running goofy formations or a double pass or a reverse, (and we may say) ‘Hey, maybe that can apply to us,’” Moore said.

The 36-year-old will bring his ever-evolving playbook to the Big Easy in 2025. But Moore’s journey to this point was anything but short. It’s clear he has been ready for this moment for some time.
