Report: Trae Young named Oklahoma basketball assistant GM

By Chris Marler
Everyone has a side hustle nowadays. Former Oklahoma Sooner legend and current NBA All-Star Trae Young does now, too.
Per Colton Sulley of The Oklahoman, Young will take on the role and title of assistant general manager for Oklahoma’s men’s basketball team. Young will also be donating $1 million to the program.

The announcement was made on Monday afternoon. While the move may sound unexpected or just plain odd, remember that fellow superstar Steph Curry recently announced he would be taking the same position at his alma mater, Davidson. Curry was the first active player in U.S. major professional sports to take an administrative job with an NCAA team.
Fellow former player Tyler Neal provided some insight to the decision as well. According to Neal, Young wanted a bigger role at Oklahoma, and his new position will go beyond simply donating his Atlanta Hawks salary—he’ll be actively involved in roster management and recruiting.
