Saints Rookies Learning the Ropes

A whopping 10 rookies made the New Orleans Saints roster this season.
The combination of drafted and undrafted players shows an infusion of youth for a team that has been questioned for its aging veteran population. Another seven rookies are currently on the team’s recently formed practice squad as well.
Don’t be fooled by the wave of young players, however. An expectation for maintaining a high standard of play and commitment permeates the youth population in the facility.
In speaking with multiple rookies during Monday’s open locker room, it quickly became apparent that the coaching staff and veteran players have established high standards.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a rookie or a veteran. The expectation is the same,” one player told LouisianaSports.Net
Another added, “Everyone is expected to do their job. You either do it or they can find someone that will.”
The latter comment likely being more about the reality of the business than a threat from the organization. But the key takeaway here is that players, regardless of their draft or playing status, know that the standards are high.
“Being around veterans at my position,” one rookie told me. “Means I have to be at my best. I have a lot left to show the world.”
Clearly the expectations being placed upon and even upheld by the players is driving not only cohesion but motivation. Making an NFL roster is wildly challenging. Staying on one is even more difficult. But meeting or exceeding the team’s seemingly newly set bar could put these young players in the best position to develop.
The approach may not guarantee wins or stamp their ticket to a Super Bowl. But it is an important part of the process of establishing a culture and identity across the team.
“We’re all saying the same thing,” another player said. “When I’m (on the field) with another player, and the defense shifts, I know we’re seeing the same thing. And we all know how to adjust.”
