The second day of the SEC Baseball Tournament went the way the first was supposed to go. A 9:30 am local start for the first game kicked off over 14 hours of baseball with four games fitting in and four more teams advancing in the single elimination tournament.
Here’s a recap of the games that were played on day two.
Game 5: Alabama-Tennessee
Alabama’s pitching staff got roughed up all afternoon by the Vols, and that’s putting it nicely. Tennessee racked up 15 runs on 20 hits against the Tide. They also scored in six of the eight innings they came to the plate against a total of seven Tide pitchers that toed the rubber.
After falling behind 5-1 in early innings, Alabama was able to claw their way back and take a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning after an inexplicable infield error with the bases loaded. However, their bullpen surrendered 10 runs over the final four innings, nine of which came in the sixth and eighth innings alone.
The ten runs Alabama scored weren’t all the fault of the Vols pitching staff, as five were unearned thanks to the aforementioned error. The defending national champs move on to Thursday where they will face No. 1 Seed Texas in a matchup we never got in the regular season.

Game 6: Oklahoma-Georgia
You can’t spell Kyson Witherspoon without K, and the Sooners ace had plenty of those once again as he took the mound to get Oklahoma into the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals. Witherspoon was fantastic despite his offense only mustering three runs against one of the worst pitching staffs in the conference this year.

The future first rounder finished with 7.2 innings pitched, eight strikeouts, and two earned runs. He flooded the strike zone with strikes, attacking Georgia hitters early in the count. At one point in the seventh inning he started off 17 of his 22 batters faced with a first pitch strike and still managed to keep the Bulldog bats at bay.
Final Score: Oklahoma 3 Georgia 2

Game 7: Florida-Ole Miss
Arguably the hottest team in the conference took on arguably the least talked about team in the conference with Florida and Ole Miss facing off late Wednesday night. First pitch came at 9:15 pm but that didn’t stop one of the biggest crowds of the tournament from showing up to see the two potential Regional 2 seeds.
Ole Miss capitalized off a sloppy Gators defense, and took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Hunter Elliott was great for the Rebels, giving up two hits and one earned run in 5.1 innings. Ole Miss was superb on the mound all night, holding the Gators to just four hits all night and getting a 3-1 win in their first game of the tournament.

Game 8: Auburn-Texas A&M
Survive and advance. That’s the motto of the 12th man and this Texas A&M Aggie baseball team this week in Hoover. So far, it’s worked. The Aggies are now 2-0 and almost halfway home to what they need to do this week to ensure they are playing next week.
A&M opened the scoring in the third and never looked back after taking a 3-0 lead. Kaeden Kent’s three run home run was all the Aggies would end up needing as they were able to hold off top ten ranked Auburn 3-2. Texas A&M only had four hits on the day and struck out 14 times. Only two of those hits came after the third inning, but the one that came off Kent’s bat was all they needed.
Auburn showed signs of life at times, but mustered only two solo home runs on the day and saw their tournament come to an end in their first game of the week. Auburn is a lock to host a regional next weekend. However, they will have to await their fate on whether or not they’ll be a top eight seed when it’s announced on selection Monday.
Final Score: Texas A&M 3 Auburn 2
