A lot of people joked about what would be Texas’ official “Welcome to the SEC” moment once the Longhorns joined the league on July 1 of this year. Joke or not, it may have come this past Saturday night in Austin against Georgia.
No, I’m not talking about the two touchdown loss to the Bulldogs. I’m talking about the moment late in the third quarter when Longhorn fans became so incensed with anger over a questionable call that they flooded the field with trash and bottles pouring down from the student section. We’ve seen this happen at several schools in the past like Ole Miss and Tennessee, and all three faced consequences from the league with a $250,000 fine.
On the heels of the embarrassing moment, Texas issued an apology for the incident Sunday afternoon.
“While we deeply appreciate the passion and loyalty of our fan base at The University of Texas at Austin, we do not condone the unsportsmanlike conduct that was exhibited by some individuals throwing objects onto the field during last night’s game and sincerely apologize to the University of Georgia players, coaches, and fans, as well as the Southeastern Conference and officiating crew,” said a statement from Texas Board of Regents chairman Kevin Eltife, UT president Jay Hartzell and athletic director Chris Del Conte.
“This type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
Texas is also resolving the matter with specific students by taking away ticket privileges from those involved in the incident.
“The throwing of debris and resulting interruption of play that took place Saturday night cannot be part of any SEC event,” said SEC commissioner Greg Sankey
