On Tuesday evening, the initial College Football Playoff rankings were released, and the confusion of the rankings versus the bracket has already set in. Remember, the top four conference champions all get a bye. So, seeds one through four won’t necessarily be ranked No. 1 through No. 4. Case in point, BYU ranks all the way down at No. 9, but would be ranked No. 4 in the bracket.
Elsewhere, Ohio State ranked No. 2 overall in the rankings, but since Oregon is the No. 1 overall seed and the projected Big Ten champion, they would get the bye, pushing Ohio State down to the No. 5 spot. All in all, the initial rankings and where each team would be seeded looked very similar to our bowl projections released earlier today.
In total, four teams from the SEC and four teams from the Big Ten are projected in the Top 12. Eight SEC teams overall were in the initial Top 25. Most notably absent were Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The rankings will be released every Tuesday night, live on ESPN.
