Auburn’s All-American forward Johni Broome will not need surgery on his injured left ankle. Broome suffered the injury in the second half of Auburn’s win over South Carolina on Saturday.
He underwent an MRI early Sunday morning and the results were positive for Bruce Pearl and the Tigers. Broome will be out indefinitely with what appears to be a left ankle sprain, but will not miss any significant time long-term.
Broome has been the best player in the country and before Saturday’s contest was the overwhelming favorite to win the Naismith Award this season. The fifth year senior from Tampa Catholic H.S. is averaging 17.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, so far this season.
Auburn has won eight consecutive games and will most likely be the new No. 1 team in the country following Tennessee’s 30 point loss to Florida, when polls are released Monday morning. Auburn plays No. 14 Mississippi State on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. CT.
