Saints sign running back Cam Akers

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The running back room is expanding for the New Orleans Saints.

After trying out over the team’s mandatory minicamp, the Saints have signed veteran running back Cam Akers, per the NFL transaction wire.

Akers impressed during his tryout days, looking fluid and moving well among a crowded running back room.

Now, he’s landed a chance to continue his opportunity with the Saints through training camp and potentially into the 2025 regular season.

He joins Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Devin Neal, Xazavian Valladay and Venus Jones Jr. and Marcus Yarns at the position. This will be a very crowded and competitive room.

Akers was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He has since also found roles with the Minnesota Vikings (for two stints) and the Houston Texans.

He has 502 carries for 2,025 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. He has also caught 52 receptions for four receiving touchdowns.
