NEW ORLEANS La. – The Saints’ second preseason test ended in a 17-17 draw with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
THE STORY
The game started off rough on both sides of the ball for the Saints. But some last-minute heroics made up for it. Down 9-17, Saints quarterback Spencer Ratter led a two-minute touchdown drive and converted a two-point try to tie up the game.
After what was a shaky start, the game turned into one of the most exciting preseason matchups we’ve seen in some time.
Rattler may have shown enough to sew up the quarterback competition on Sunday. But with him and rookie Tyler Shough splitting the two exhibition games, the team may want to get one more look next week against the Denver Broncos.
A late interception by rookie Safety Jonas Sanker almost gave the team a chance to go for the win. However, after stepping out of bounds with no time left on the clock, the opportunity slipped through the team’s fingers.
THE STAR
Rattler stood out Sunday, delivering several sharp throws and bouncing back from a red zone interception to lead a game-tying drive. He went 7-of-8 passing with a touchdown on the final series and added 11 rushing yards on a scramble.

THE STATS
- Shough turned his start into an efficient, but not very effective day. He completed nine of his 12 passes for 66 passing yards and was sacked twice for a loss of seven. He was also called for intentional grounding for a loss of 12 yards. However, he threw no interceptions and did a good job keeping the ball out of harm’s way.
- Rattler went 18/24 for 199 passing yards, a passing touchdown and an interception.
- Linebacker Jaylan Ford came up with an interception.
- Rookie defensive tackle Vernon Broughton came up with a fumble recovery on a botched handoff from Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
- Sanker came up with a big interception to close the game out as the Jaguars were driving for a potential game-winning field goal.
THE INJURIES
- Defensive tackle John Ridgeway III went to the injury tent with an apparent upper body injury. After being evaluated, he was taken off of the field.
- Offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz looked to get up slowly after a play. We didn’t see him get evaluated and he remained on the sideline, out of uniform, for the rest of the game.
