While the argument can be made that the New Orleans Saints should avoid trading future assets at this point in the offseason to acquire new talent, the team has been rumored to have at least been checking on what opportunities might be available.
Specifically, the Saints have reportedly been interested in the trade market at running back. However, one of the big fish that could have been pursued at the position is already on the move.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Washington Commanders have traded running back Brian Robinson to the San Francisco 49ers.
Robinson was one of the rushers that would have made a lot of sense for the Saints. But with him now on his way to the Bay Area to pair up with Christian McCaffrey, New Orleans will have to look elsewhere if they truly intend to pursue an addition.
Some options remain such as New York Jets running back Breece Hall, Jacksonville Jaguars rusher Travis Etienne and Seattle Seahawks veteran Kenneth Walker III still remain. But one of the most coveted pursuits at the position is now off the board.
New Orleans still has seven running backs on its roster with Alvin Kamara leading the way followed by third-year rusher Kendre Miller, veterans Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Cam Akers and Velus Jones Jr. and rookies Devin Neal and Marcus Yarns.
If the Saints feel they can find a real needle-mover at a decent price, they could look to add further competition and improvement to the room, which hasn’t necessarily stood out so far this preseason and training camp. However, finding a player for more than just the 2025 season at a reasonable trade price may get more and more challenging.
Perhaps waiting to see what roster cuts look like on Tuesday, August 26 may be the most advantageous way to pursue new faces and challengers in the room.
