METAIRIE, La. – The New Orleans Saints love speed at the wide receiver position and the team just acquired more.
Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, the Saints claimed former LSU and Nebraska wide receiver Trey Palmer off of waivers on Wednesday. The team also claimed another offensive lineman Xavier Truss.
Palmer, the 6-foot, 190 pound wide receiver who was previously with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has 32 games of NFL experience including 51 receptions, 557 receiving yards and a quartet of touchdown catches. He has also used his 4.33-second speed returning 17 career punts for an average of eight yards a piece.
While he doesn’t provide the team another big body like the recently acquired Devaughn Vele, he does add more burst and explosion to the position. The Saints formed their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday keeping six wide receivers:
- Chris Olave
- Rashid Shaheed
- Brandin Cooks
- Mason Tipton
- Cedrick Wilson Jr.
- Devaughn Vele
New Orleans will need a pair of corresponding moves in order to make room for both acquisitions which go directly to the active roster. Those moves are expected by the league to be processed before 4:00 p.m. ET.
Truss started 14 games for the Georgia Bulldogs last year, all at right tackle. He also manned 65 snaps at right tackle for the Denver Broncos this preseason. Listed at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, he’ll be excellent depth for the depleted tackle unit in New Orleans.
New Orleans also lost two players on waivers, linebacker D’Marco Jackson (Chicago Bears) and cornerback Rico Payton (New York Giants). Those will not account for the corresponding moves necessary as they were on waivers, not the active roster.
