Another week, and another new number one. The flip flopping at the top spot continues as Diego Pavia continues to put up video numbers. Here’s this week’s SEC Quarterback rankings.
The Sad Six
16. Michael Van Buren, LSU
15. Blake Shapen, Mississippi State
14. DJ Lagway, Florida
13. Beau Pribula, Missouri
12. Cutter Boley, Kentucky
11. Taylen Green, Arkansas
The Top Ten
- Whoever for Auburn
Auburn decided to preserve Ashton Daniels’ redshirt by sitting him against Mercer. They instead started a true freshman, and third stringer, at QB instead. All Deuce Knight did was put up 401 yards and six touchdowns in his first collegiate start. Not bad young man. Not bad at all.
- LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
It took 11 games and a group of six opponents, but we finally saw the LaNorris Sellers of old. He had 356 yards of offense and four touchdowns, scoring twice through the air and twice on the ground. He also completed 80 percent of his passes in the 51-7 route of Coastal Carolina.
- John Mateer, Oklahoma
The Missouri game was quintessential Mateer. He completed right around 50 percent of his passes for less than 175 yards. But, he added another 60 on the ground on 18 carries. Most importantly, he didn’t have a turnover for the second consecutive game, and he got his Sooners one win away from a berth in the College Football Playoff.
- Ty Simpson, Alabama
Simpson threw another pair of interceptions against Eastern Illinois, and the former No. 1 ranked quarterback in the SEC has seemingly fallen off a cliff from a confidence standpoint. Since the Tennessee game, he’s had at least one turnover in each of the Tide’s last four contests. He’s also only thrown for two touchdowns in his three games since the start of November.
- Joey Aguilar, Tennessee
Aguilar was awesome against Florida. He didn’t throw for a touchdown, but he didn’t need to. What impressed me most was that he didn’t have a single turnover against the Gators defense. He completed 77 percent of his passes for 204 yards. That’s the third time in his last four games he’s completed over 73 percent of his passes in a game.
- Arch Manning, Texas
Manning has been equally as good as Marcel Reed when you look at their stats for the entire season. He was fantastic on Saturday against the worst defense in the league. Manning torched Arkansas for 398 yards and six touchdowns. He threw for four, ran for one, and even caught another. Since the Mississippi State game, Manning has accounted for 14 touchdowns and two interceptions.
- Marcel Reed, Texas A&M
Reed needed just ten completions to rack up 120 yards and three touchdowns. Saturday’s game against FCS Samford pushed him over the 3,000 yard mark for total offense and 30 touchdowns for the season. How he plays against Texas will determine not just if the Aggies will make it to New York, but his potential legacy as a whole.
- Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Ole Miss was on a bye this week.
- Gunner Stockton, Georgia
Stockton wasn’t asked to do much against Charlotte, but he was still as efficient as usual against them. He finished 17-for-21 and had over 200 yards of offense. He did throw an interception and was held without a touchdown for the first time in a game all season. Still, he’s second in the SEC in completion percentage and ranks fourth in passer rating.
- Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt
The push for Pavia to get to New York is in full swing, and he’s back in the top spot after his game against Kentucky. Pavia finished with 532 yards of offense and six touchdowns last Saturday. He’s been tremendous all season, but especially as of late.
For the year he’s completing 71.8 percent of his passes and has amassed over 3500 yards and 34 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He leads the SEC in passer rating, completion percentage, yards per attempt and total yards per game. Saturday will be his final audition to get to New York for the Heisman ceremony when Vanderbilt travels to Tennessee.
