Hours after gutting through LSU’s win over South Carolina, Whit Weeks couldn’t even stand up in the shower.
His ankle was broken.
“I hardly even practiced before that game because I could hardly even walk on it,” Weeks said. “I sucked it up for that game, and I remember on Sunday I was taking a shower and couldn’t even stand up in the shower. I probably need to go get this checked out.”
An MRI revealed a broken talus bone in his ankle. Weeks suffered the injury at Ole Miss and played 61 snaps against South Carolina. He would miss the next four games before returning in a limited capacity on Saturday against Western Kentucky.
“It cracked right down the middle, so once it’s heeled, it’s heeled,” Weeks said. “It’s going to take a couple of more weeks. I’m trying to turn that corner, but I’m just struggling.”
Weeks was a preseason all-American and captain of a defense expected to help compete for championships. Instead, he and LSU’s offensive captain Garrett Nussmeier spent more time in the training room for most of the season as LSU slipped out of contention and the top 25.
“That’s just life,” Weeks said. “After we beat Clemson, it’s like we’re on top of the world. Stuff happens, stuff happens, boom, boom, boom, next thing you know coach gets fired. It’s just, wow, that’s just life. It’s not going to the way you want it to every time.”
Weeks is hoping to play around 30 snaps on Saturday at Oklahoma. He’s determined to help the team in any capacity he can. Some of that will be on the field. Some of that will be in support from the sideline. He hopes to be closer to full strength for a bowl game.
“You’ve just got to keep going no matter what,” Weeks said. “What if in 20-30 years you get fired from your job? You just gonna lay down and quit, or are you gonna keep going in life?”
