Negotiations aren’t a one-way street in the NFL even though they are often discussed in that context. Not only does a team have to be interested in a player, but it must position itself as a desirable situation for that player, as well.
The New Orleans Saints and linebacker Demario Davis have been a match made in heaven since 2018.
Davis has seen career highs in sacks, tackles for a loss, passes defended and tackles since joining New Orleans. He has also enjoyed each of his recognition as a First and Second-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl linebacker while in the Big Easy.
This offseason, however, the Saints and Davis embark on an unfamiliar journey: navigating his expiring contract.
During a recent visit with Up & Adams host Kay Adams, Davis made it clear that his return in 2026 won’t be for lack of options.
“Yeah, I’m coming back to the NFL,” Davis said when asked about his plans for next season. “I’m coming back to the NFL.”
The key takeaway from his answer was that he did not specify that he will return to the Saints specifically, but that shouldn’t be a surprise.
Davis’ contract is set to void on March 10. At that time, he’ll become eligible to sign with another team or at least negotiate to help establish a market value.
At which time, New Orleans can make an educated decision on whether or not to match that value and pursue the option of bringing him back to the Saints.
But these negotiations aren’t just about whether or not the team wants to keep the player, which the Saint very well may want. But the situation has to be right for said player.
With several young linebackers waiting in the wings, the Saints could offer an opportunity for Davis to stay and continue to excel in new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley’s system, but could simultaneously be in a good position for football life after him as well.
The eventual decision between the Saints and Davis will be a big one, and one that can still go in several directions.
