Garrett Nussmeier‘s senior season ended before it began.
He got hurt before LSU put pads on, and he was clearly hampered by the lingering issue all season. With a month left, he shut it down. Admirably, he did everything he could, but the pain was apparent. As he prepares for the NFL Draft, he’s opening up about what he went through.
“My injury occurred in Fall Camp, Day 2, practice two of fall camp,” he told reporters. “How much did it affect me? I think it was pretty evident. I really wasn’t able to throw the football. I had a stabbing pain in my ab every time I went to go throw the ball.”

LSU gave Nussmeier days off in camp. The final two practices the media observed. including the workout in Tiger Stadium seven days prior to the Clemson opener, Nussmeier didn’t throw. The medical staff did what they could, but the issue persisted.
“We weren’t able to figure out exactly what it was,” Nussmeier said. “It was a frustrating deal. It wasn’t LSU’s fault. It wasn’t the doctors’ fault. They did a great job of taking care of me. It was just a rare deal. We didn’t figure out what it was until about two months ago. I had about nine days to prepare for the Senior Bowl, and try to get back right for that, so I made a lot of progress over the last month.”
Nussmeier registered the fastest velocity among the Senior Bowl quarterbacks and threw the longest air pass, as well. Now he’s at the NFL Combine attempting to show professional franchises that he’s still the quarterback who topped 4,000 yards as a junior and is worthy of an early selection.
“Feeling much more like myself, which has been exciting,” Nussmeier said. “Learning how to retrain myself, getting rid of the bad habits that I created. Being able to throw the football like I know I can.”
The quarterbacks and wide receivers take the field in Indianapolis on Saturday for workouts.
