New Orleans Saints

It only took training camp and one game appearance for it to become clear that veteran safety Julian Blackmon was a perfect fit for the New Orleans Saints’ defense.
Unfortunately for Blackmon, the team and defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, who’d pursued the safety as a college prospect back in the 2020 NFL Draft, that one game would be the lone appearance the ballhawking safety would have in 2025. A labrum injury ended his year after just Week 1.
Blackmon was impressive in his first start against the Arizona Cardinals, almost coming up with two takeaways in the matchup and showing his rangey skill set.
He was brought back on a one-year extension during the 2026 offseason, guaranteeing his eventual return to the team. The question that lingers is exactly where he will contribute.
While he was sidelined in 2025, rookie safety Jonas Sanker stepped in and played very well. The rookie’s impact could have a negative impact on Blackmon’s outlook, but with the departure of cornerback Alontae Taylor, there should be ample opportunities for both safeties in 2026.
Blackmon and Sanker could each be fit to take on the STAR/Slot role in Staley’s system. Whoever mans that position opens a path for the other at safety. In any case, the Saints’ veteran safety should be on a positive path toward being a more constant and impactful contributor in his second year in New Orleans.
Blackmon has reeled in 10 interceptions in his 67 career game appearances. That, along with his 22 career passes defended, is set to add some enticing defensive play at the catch point for the Saints’ passing defense in 2026.
