Earlier this week a story broke about comedian Nate Bargatze giving a role to incoming freshman quarterback Jared Curtis in his new movie The Breadwinner. It begged the question, with so many famous and wealthy alumni around the league, which schools are raking in the most cash from donations.
Thankfully, Matt Stahl of Al. com did the dirty work and found the numbers.
By the numbers
- Texas $167,786,462
- Tennessee $110,626,678
- Oklahoma $92,923,040
- Alabama $66,791,497
- LSU $65,702,463
- Mississippi State $59,109,136
- Auburn $56,452,784
- Georgia $52,123,526
- Texas A&M $50,013,894
- Florida $49,666,976
- Ole Miss $47,155,567
- Missouri $46,469,656
- Arkansas $37,051,389
- Kentucky $32,657,330
- South Carolina $17,503,606
What stands out
It’s wild how much oil money is floating around the stands in Austin, Texas. It was to be expected that Texas had the highest amount, but to have the most by over $57 million and have more than double the amount of 12 of the other 15 teams listed is insane.
It’s also surprising that for as much public scrutiny that Alabama has faced about being “poor” in comparison to other schools around the country, they were fourth on the list. What’s not surprising is that the football first fanbase from Tuscaloosa donated $53.6 million of their $66.8 million was specifically for football. That means over 80 percent of their donations were for one sport only.
Lastly, what’s going on in South Carolina? The Gamecocks ranked last in donations at just over $17.5 million, nearly half of Kentucky’s total and roughly a tenth of Texas’. Competing at that level will be difficult unless those numbers rise.
