We continue our countdown to kick-off with our series detailing one biggest concern for every SEC team heading into 2026. Today, we head to Athens to talk about the biggest concern for the Georgia Bulldogs this season.
Wide Receiver
There isn’t a lot to choose from here for the Georgia Bulldogs. They return one of the most efficient and winningest quarterbacks in the country. They should have their best defensive line since the Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter years. And oh yeah, they still have Kirby Smart as head coach.
This roster is constructed eerily similar to the 2021 and 2022 teams that won the national title. There’s young talent everywhere and almost none of it left in the transfer portal last year and the several years prior for that matter. And, wait until you see the freaks that Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo have at their disposal at the tight end position. This is the most championship caliber that Smart has had at his disposal in the last three to four years. If there is one question though, it’s the wide receiver position.
Georgia is one of the unique teams that doesn’t lose a lot to the portal or seek out a majority of their starters from there, either. In the last four portal cycles the Dawgs brought in 34 players total. To put that in perspective, there were three teams in the SEC that had more than that this year alone. They’re also unique in that they have 14 returning starters from last year’s team. In the day of the transfer portal, that is not only the most in the SEC, but they’re one of four teams in the league that has more than ten.
None of those 14 returning starters are at wide receiver. In fact, no one on the two deep there is either. There’s some young talent there like freshmen Talyn Taylor and some veteran guys like London Humphreys. Also, one of the nine players they brought in this season’s portal class was Isiah Canion. Canion spent the previous season just 79 miles away playing wideout in Atlanta for Georgia Tech. There’s talent in this receiver room, but it’s a drop off in comparison to what it was a season ago when they had Zachariah Branch, Dillon Bell and Colbie Young.
Again, there is mainly nothing but good news about this year’s Georgia squad. Offensively, they should be just as potent as always with a strong run game and improved offensive line. The tight ends will be a huge part of the passing game, which should come as no surprise to anyone who’s watched Georgia play football in the last five years. But, how much will they have to carry the load for receiving production? One would have to think, it will be heavily leaned upon more this year than last because of the lack of depth and talent at this year’s receiver unit in comparison to some in the past. And, that is the biggest concern for Georgia in 2026.
