The college football calendar has changed immensely over the past few seasons. One of the biggest changes to that calendar has been the times of priority for recruiting. Gone are the days of January being loaded with official visits before a February decision date. Now, June is the month where most colleges do their damage in collecting new commitments.
As June comes to a close, here’s a look at the latest in SEC recruiting.
Texas Pay&M
First off, the fact that that hasn’t been a more widely used nickname for the Aggies is absurd, but back to the actual topic at hand.
Mike Elko and the Aggies have put on a clinic on the recruiting trail so far this offseason. Texas A&M currently holds the No. 1 ranked class in the country, and it’s on pace to potentially be the highest ranked class in recruiting history.
They picked up even more steam on Sunday when they nabbed a commitment from four star, top 100 wide receiver Eric McFarland from IMG Academy. The small but speedy wideout stands at just 5-foot-8 but has been clocked in the 4.3 range in the 40. He’s just another example of the embarrassment of riches this Aggie class has become for the 2027 cycle.
So far, Texas A&M has landed 25 commitments with 16 blue chip recruits. Six are five-star players and 11 are ranked in the top 62 nationally according to On3.
Latest with LSU
LSU shot up like a rocket in June, and they don’t appear to be anywhere close to done with their class. The Tigers started the month with just four commitments, and with just two days left in the month they sit with 14. Adding ten players is a great month and big win in general, but the quality of prospects they added was enormous. Five of the ten players were four stars or higher and ranked in the top 200 nationally.
What’s next could be even more exciting. The No. 1 player in the country, Jalen Brewster, has been committed to Texas Tech since October. He whittled down his choices to a few more candidates though with LSU and Florida also being heavily involved. As of this weekend, sources say that Florida may no longer be in play and his interest in LSU is more than just casual. He seemed to hit it off with Ed Orgeron during his visit and has been seen with LSU gear on several times this summer at workouts and camps.
What’s wrong with Bama?
Nothing is probably the short answer, but a more in-depth response would be – not nearly as much as many are making it out to be.
On the surface level this Alabama class has a lot of people wondering what happened to the once recruiting juggernaut. Until this week, Alabama sat outside the top 50 nationally in team rankings. They also don’t have a single top ten player in the state of Alabama committed. That seems unfathomable.
The truth is probably more in their past successes hurting the ability to have more new ones. That’s not to say that they haven’t been shoved in a locker a time or two on the trail this offseason. There have been several elite blue chip and five star prospects that they’ve led for and eventually lost this cycle. It’s also an immediate double take any time you read “Alabama lands (insert 3 star player name here) over Wake Forest and Cincinnatti.”
Looking a little deeper, Alabama has landed a top four class in each of the last two cycles. Of those 48 players they brought in, 47 are still on the team. They also only have seven seniors graduating on this year’s team. There may just not be a ton of room for commits in this cycle.
