It’s the Talkin’ Season Super Bowl.
In two weeks, we’ll have practices to report on, games to preview and the hint of football season in the air. Currently, it’s 101 degrees and football feels like a distant dream. But SEC Media Days offers an opportunity to get things started.
Over the next four days, we’ll hear takes, break down games and pretend we know what the fall holds even though the only certainty is that we don’t.
Last summer, LSU was somewhat of a darling. It all went south before Halloween. I think the same may be true regarding the media’s feeling on LSU this time around even though the coach will be roasted for his December decision making. The team is pretty good on paper.
I’ll rattle off a few predictions for the week with the understanding that not a single one holds water.
PREDICTED FINISH
I think the media is going to project LSU to be good. And I think having every big game sans Ole Miss at home will be a talking point. LSU is unlikely, in my opinion, to beat Clemson, Texas A&M, Alabama AND Texas in Tiger Stadium, but having them at home helps the cause. A 3-1 mark over those four would be pretty salty.
Georgia is the king, and I think Texas will get some love. A&M has enjoyed back-to-back strong regular seasons. Ole Miss has a really good backfield, and Alabama and Oklahoma are coming off playoff seasons.
I think LSU will be picked fifth when all the votes are tallied. They’ll trump Oklahoma and probably settle right next to A&M. Kiffin, who is disliked by the masses, has their respect on the field. Sam Leavitt will be popular, too.
ALL-SEC
I’m not sure LSU will have a lot of first team selections. While the portal class was highly rated, returning players often get the nod in July.
I think the transfer class will get its flowers on the second team. Here’s my guess on LSU’s honorees.
