Many believe that real football begins with padded practices in training camp. If that’s the case, several New Orleans Saints players took the opportunity to impress when the real thing got under way in the team’s first practice in pads on Monday. While the trenches are typically the focus, some skill position players often thrive in the re-invigorated setting as well, which was the case for New Orleans.
WR Barion Brown
Quickly becoming the darling of Saints training camp, fans won’t have to worry about being let down by another camp standout as Brown already has a solidified role as the team’s likely top returner. But now, he’s shown what he can also bring to the offensive attack with his field-stretching ability. Brown has been a consistent winner downfield, but on a couple of occasions, hasn’t been able to finish through the catch. After a quick conference with fellow wideout Chris Olave, Brown looked to break through during the first day of padded practices.
S Lorenzo Styles Jr.
On the defensive side, it’s not uncommon for a defensive end or linebacker to standout when the pads go in. This time, though STAR/slot depth defender and rookie Styles was the player that most caught eyes. Especially during one-on-ones where he had both a pass breakup and an interception.
OL Jeremiah Wright
Apparently there was a rookie theme to padded practices, a promising sign for a draft class with high expectations. Wright’s one-on-one drew a slew of praise throughout the day for those that took them in. He’s physical, strong and really tough to move once he digs in his heels. He’s got some development left ahead of him, but the Saints are very happy to have him in their facility, especially after getting to show off his tenacity. It’s not the first time Wright’s made headlines with a one-on-one win.
