SEC head coaches held their weekly teleconference Wednesday, sharing key updates, notable highlights, and quotes from across the league.
Alabama
Kalen DeBoer provided an update on Ryan Williams after he suffered what looked to be a concussion on Saturday against Florida State.
“Coming along day-to-day,” DeBoer said. “Been on the practice field. He’s doing the normal protocol and coming along nicely. That’s probably the best way to explain it.”
Vanderbilt
Clark Lea provided an update on the latest lawsuit from college athletes against the NCAA. This one was spearheaded by Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson in regards to the “redshirt rule” allowing players to play five years with four years of eligibility.
“I’m aware obviously of the lawsuit. I don’t know all the ins-and-outs and so I’d hesitate to make comments on it other than to say I’m aware of it,” Lea said. “And obviously we’ll always work in support of the players and the best experience we can create here at Vanderbilt. But I don’t want to go further than that just because I don’t know the ins and outs and this is all kind of new to me.”
LSU
Brian Kelly gave an update on the new advertisements coming to Tiger Stadium.
“I wasn’t privy to the conversation. I know why it happened,” Kelly said. “Obviously it’s a revenue stream. I think that’s the new college football, right, with revenue sharing and all that goes with that? You’re looking for revenue streams.”
LSU was also hoping to add advertising patches to their jerseys. At least three other schools in the SEC have decided to do the same with on-field sponsor visibility (South Carolina, Alabama, and Auburn).
Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss head to Lexington, Kentucky in a rare revenge game between the Rebels and Wildcats. Kiffin had what was arguably the best line of the day when he compared Zach Calzada to Joe Flacco.
“And also it’s a quarterback that’s thrown for like 9,000 yards, whatever, in his 10th year of playing,” Kiffin said. “So it’s a guy who’s won a lot of games, played a lot, throws really well. It’s like a college football career like they’ve got Joe Flacco now or something.”
