NEW ORLEANS, La. — The New Orleans Saints have announced their roster moves ahead of Sunday’s Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
After undergoing shoulder surgery this week, the Saints have placed safety Julian Blackmon on Injured Reserve. This move has been expected as Blackmon suffered his injury during the Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Rookie Jonas Sanker is expected to start in his place.
With Blackmon’s move freeing up an active roster spot, New Orleans signed defensive lineman Jonah Williams from the practice squad. Williams was a standard elevation last week and appeared in 13 defensive snaps and seven special teams snaps.
As for standard elevations, the Saints again brought two up from the practice squad for game day.
Burgess will help the team keep a handful of active safeties while also providing themselves some key veteran special teams experience. Meanwhile, Diggs gives New Orleans a fourth edge surge for the game after Chase Young was ruled out for the second consecutive week. Diggs took seven defensive snaps last week, Burgess is returning from an injury suffered during the Saints’ joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams during the preseason.
