Over the last week, the New Orleans Saints saw a pair of coaching staff members return to the team despite having a chance to accept promotions with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In doing so, it proved that head coach Kellen Moore has built a culture and cultivated a future in which football professionals want to be included.
Quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien was considered the top candidate for the Steelers’ offensive coordinator position while tight ends coach Chase Haslett was in contention for the same role in Pittsburgh with the addition of the passing game coordinator tag. Ultimately, both are set to remain in New Orleans.
Should the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching hire of Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak go as expected, another coordinator position could tempt Tolzien. But without the connections in Seattle like he had with Steelers’ head coach Mike McCarthy, the Saints can likely continue to enjoy their sigh of relief.
With a large focus on community engagement, unity and preparing to weather the storm of a tough start, Moore built an environment that supported players and coaches alike. One that clearly no one is in a hurry to abandon.
