It was another big weekend in SEC baseball with three of the eight series featuring a matchup between top 25 teams. Here’s a recap of the weekend that was in the SEC.
Out of the Box
The purple and gold faithful did not have a lot to cheer for in Baton Rouge this weekend. It was a massive opportunity for LSU, and they fell flat on their face. Getting swept by a top ten team isn’t necessarily the worst thing to happen to a team that’s unranked and came into the weekend with just a 6-9 conference record. Having it happen to a team like Texas A&M and turning into six straight SEC losses is brutal for the Tigers.
There were moments during the weekend that seemed almost surreal. Three things that sttod out most:
- Jay Johnson’s accountability in acknowledging how he (incorrectly and/or poorly) constructed this roster
- LSU threw its 59th wild pitch of the season which is 21 more than the next closest team in the SEC
- Jorian Wilson, the Texas A&M right fielder, is going to be must-see television. There are a few things he did this weekend that were Dave Winfield-esque and just absolutely silly.

Dave’s Big Jinx
Before the weekend Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn was asked about Georgia’s offense and how well they’ve been able to hit the ball deep this year. Georgia led the nation in home runs coming into the week with 98. Van Horn had this to say about how he hoped his team would perform.
“They didn’t hit a home run against Florida all weekend. They had 98 going in, they still got 98, I hope they have 98 when they leave on Saturday night.”
Oh buddy, was that wishful thinking. Georgia scored 34 runs on the weekend including a Saturday outburst for 26 in the series finale. In that game alone the Dawgs hit nine home runs including three from catcher Daniel Jackson. Georgia now leads the nation with 113 home runs, and left Fayetteville with their first road win against Arkansas in 18 years.

Under the radar
After a few weekends of underachieving by their standards, Florida and Auburn each had big bounce back weekends. Auburn went on the road against a Florida team that had been hot against ranked opponents. The Gators won the series opener on Thursday improving their record to 11-1 against top 25 teams this season.
Auburn punched back. The Tigers won the final two games doing what they do best – pitching well and scratching enough runs across to win.
Texas hosted a No. 11 Alabama team that was hoping to steal a road series against a Longhorn club that had been a little less stable in the last few weeks than the start of the season. Texas won the series, and got a huge boost to their RPI and strength of schedule after winning two of three.
Texas allowing Alabama’s offense to score just five runs in three games was by the far the most impressive part of the weekend. Longhorn arms dominated Alabama, striking out 19 Alabama hitters in Saturday’s game alone.

Don’t look now
Ole Miss’s stock is soaring right now. Haters will look at their last two weekends and say the 5-1 record wasn’t that impressive since it came against two unranked teams in LSU and Tennessee. After seeing LSU get swept once again this weekend, I would tend to agree with that sentiment. The win on the road at Tennessee however, was very impressive.
The Rebels haven’t gotten a lot of respect nationally, but this weekend should change that.
