The regular season has come to an end and the bracket is set for Hoover. Here’s what this week will look like at the SEC Baseball Tournament and what to expect.
From first to (almost) worst
There’s apparently a curse with SEC teams the year after winning the national championship. LSU heads to Hoover as the No. 14 seed in the tournament. The Tigers went from preseason No. 1 in the country to 9-21 in conference play, losing 15 of their last 18 league games.
How bad was it? It’s the first time since the 1975-1976 season that LSU had a losing record in SEC play in football, men’s basketball and baseball. That bad.
LSU will need to win six games in six days and become the unlikeliest of champions if they want to go to the postseason. That begins with a Tuesday night showdown with No. 11 Oklahoma. That’s a winnable game. After that, the road gets rough to say the least.
SEC Depth may ruin any Cinderella story
There may not be a legitimate national title contender in the conference this year. Georgia and Texas have led in the standings for most of the year. What’s scary is that it does feel like any team No. 1 through 8 in the conference could leave Hoover with the trophy. That may not result in those teams winning a national title, or even getting to Omaha. It does however create a bit of a blockade for most of the No. 9-16 seeds who have to begin play on Tuesday.
Mississippi State is one of the most loaded rosters in the country, and they are the eight seed. Auburn has arguably the pitching staff in America and have been ranked in the top ten since the start of the year. That’s the No. 6 seed in the conference.
So what teams from the bottom eight can open play on Tuesday and make it to the weekend? Maybe none.
