New Orleans Saints
By Ross Jackson
For the second year in a row, the New Orleans Saints’ safety room may be its deepest position group in defense. Led by veteran safety Justin Reid, the group has a number of contributing players like second-year safety Jonas Sanker along with veterans Jordan Howden and Terrell Burgess.
The Saints also retained another starting-caliber player at the position this offseason in safety Julian Blackmon. Who is set to return to the field potentially during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) in the coming weeks, should he be good to go in his return to injury.
Once he makes it back to the field, there could be a shakeup at safety.
Blackmon started Week 1 last year opposite Reid, but suffered a labrum injury that ended his season early.
His prowling, deep safety experience and slot versatility were intriguing elements to add to defensive coordinator Brandon Staley’s system.
After having his season cut short, Sanker stepped into the starting safety role in his place.
Now, with Reid, Sanker and Blackmon back for 2026, it’s a wonder which combination will find the field most. Or if a position shift may be in the books for any players involved.
Both Blackmon and Sanker present a skill set that could be tried in the STAR/slot role. The return of Blackmon could open up an opportunity for either to shift focus into that position instead of remaining at full-time safety.
The Saints begin OTA practices on Wednesday, with the local media in attendance on Thursday. One of the biggest storylines to watch will be tracking the candidates to take over the slot role. Blackmon and Sanker are likely to be among that number.
Blackmon’s return should be an exciting one for Staley and his defense. And with it could come some intriguing ripple effects.
