Shough becomes the second New Orleans Saints player to win the award since its inception in 2002. Running back Alvin Kamara took home the fan-voted honor in 2017.
This award is separate from the AP’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award, which will be presented Thursday night at NFL Honors, but is still an acknowledgement of Shough’s impressive debut season and representative of the bright future the quarterback has ahead of him in New Orleans.
Shough is also a finalist for the AP’s award.
He compiled the second‑most passing yards (2,384) and second‑highest passer rating (91.3) in his class, and Shough’s 67.6% completion percentage was the highest among all rookies.
He also carved his way into the Saints franchise record books with the most passing yards, passing touchdowns, and highest completion percentage of any Saints rookie quarterback all-time.
The former Louisville star was under consideration among a talented pool of rookies on both sides of the ball including Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan and Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger, each of whom are considered the favorites for AP Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
This adds to Shough’s rookie year decorations after being selected as a part of the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team along with his teammate, left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.
Saints fans can find out Thursday night at 8 p.m. CT/ 9 p.m. ET during the league’s NFL Honors presentation if another trophy is on the way to the Shough household.
