The administrative caravan from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge continues.

McNeese has announced that Athletic Director Heath Schroyer is leaving for LSU. He’ll serve as Senior Deputy AD/Executive Director of External Relations for the LSU System.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision for me,” said Schroyer via press release. “I love McNeese and Lake Charles. I’ve been here longer than I’ve been anywhere and Louisiana has become home for both myself and my son. I’m so grateful to my team, our community and Poke Nation for believing in the vision and putting in the work it took to get us to where we are today. Over the years I have had opportunities to leave for bigger jobs that paid more money and I have turned all of them down for one reason only: I wanted to finish what we started, and I felt we hadn’t completed what we set out to do. At this point, I feel McNeese is on an unparalleled trajectory and as hard as it is to leave a place I love so much, it’s time for me to move on and take on a new challenge.”

Schroyer was named AD in Lake Charles in 2020 and was integral in hiring Will Wade to lead the basketball program which has reached the NCAA Tournament three straight years. He worked for current LSU President Dr. Wade Rousse at McNeese.

Schroyer is a basketball coach by nature. He coached in college for 26 years, 24 at the Division 1 level. A dozen of those were as a head coach at Portland State, Wyoming, Tennessee-Martin and McNeese.

The 54-year-old is a Walkersville, Maryland, native.

This move will ramp up speculation about the future of LSU’s basketball program. Schroyer, Dr. Rousse and Wade remain close, and a reunion in Baton Rouge could be coming.
