Ole Miss Athletics
By Chris Marler
Last week felt like the first time all season there were almost no complaints and pretty widespread agreement with my power rankings. (Editor’s note: that wasn’t entirely true.)
Naturally, all four teams at the top of my rankings lost. Not only lost, but went a combined 1-10 on the weekend with three sweeps. This week, I’ll be throwing darts blindfolded and praying they land on Texas all 16 times.
1. Texas A&M
Sure, why not.
The Aggies technically got a sweep over No. 1 Texas, and had one of the best atmospheres that we’ve seen all season. Texas A&M doesn’t seem like their ceiling necessarily involves Omaha, but they also haven’t gotten enough credit for how good of a season they’ve put together.
They’re 27-7 and coming off a huge win over a top-five team. That also moves them into a tie for second with Texas, with the tiebreaker in their back pocket.
Completely missed that they were back from rain delay

2. Texas
Losing on the road to a ranked team playing in their Super Bowl isn’t the end of the world. Even with the losses, Texas is still the highest SEC team in the latest RPI Rankings at No. 2. They are one of just two teams that rank in the top five in the conference in both ERA and batting average.
The good news for Texas is that they only play two ranked opponents in their final five SEC series, and they get both at home.
3. Auburn
What a perfect weekend for Auburn to get a reeling Kentucky team. At the start of the year, some people thought this would be a pitchers duel all weekend. The concern for this Auburn team is their bats going silent at times.
That was not the case this weekend. The Tigers did drop one to Kentucky on Saturday 5-4, but in their two wins they outscored the Cats 23-5, putting up double digit runs in each game.
4. Florida
Florida is so beautifully inconsistent and hilarious this season. The Gators went on the road to Georgia and took two of three from the Bulldogs. It’s the second time this season they’ve won a road series against a top five team.
They are incredibly erratic and undependable, and they are going to be an absolute liability at some point to someone’s postseason hopes or tournament life.
The Gators are 27-10 this season, with nine of those losses coming against unranked teams. Against ranked opponents at the time, they’re an impressive 10-1.

5. Georgia
How good has Georgia been this year? They just lost two of three to Florida and still have a two game lead in the conference standings. There are a ton of things Georgia not only does well, but does better than almost anyone in the country.
They absolutely rake at the plate and have three of the top five batting averages in the SEC in their lineup. All three are hitting over .379, and the two highest are Dan Jackson and Tre Phelps, who also rank in the top four of the SEC in home runs.
As a team, they have led the nation in home runs for nearly the entire season. But, like a basketball team that relies on the three too much, when they’re not on they really struggle to find ways to win. This weekend they didn’t hit a single home run for the first time all season, and they lost two of three.
6. Arkansas
Arkansas finally looked like the team we thought we were going to see in the preseason. The Hogs went to Tuscaloosa and swept what had been the hottest team in the conference coming into that series.
It was a vintage performance from Dave Van Horn’s bunch. They were excellent in all three phases of the game. Now, can they stack that performance with another one this upcoming week? That’s one thing they’ve struggled to do all year long.

7. Alabama
I originally dropped Alabama one more spot, but their year long resume is way too good to ignore. Even with their series sweep against Arkansas, they still rank No. 3 in the country in RPI and have a top five strength of schedule. They have series sweeps over Auburn and Florida, and are 8-1 against those two and Oklahoma combined. Where Bama tends to struggle is with teams that wait for you to make a mistake, or multiple. They also need their pitching to keep the other team under five runs or they have almost no shot at winning. They’ve allowed six or more runs just 12 times this season, but they’ve lost nine of those games.
8. Ole Miss
My goodness. Maybe losing three straight to their biggest rival in Starkville was a wake up call. Or maybe they saw the LSU logo and became so fueled with rage that they tapped into some crazy superhuman version of themselves. Like in those stories you hear about a mom who’s child is in danger, and some petite pregnant woman named Brenda somehow gets a surge of power and can lift a car. That’s what Ole Miss has done over the last two weeks. They’re a pregnant mom with a crazy deadlift ability.
They absolutely took it to LSU. There were times it got dicey, but they did what good teams do and LSU did what bad teams do – make more mistakes.

9. Mississippi State
“I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!” – Tyra Banks. That’s all I have to say right now.
10. Tennessee
I don’t want to jump the gun and say that the Vols are back. A young team like that with a first year head coach, though? That sweep will go a long way in helping them turn a corner confidence wise as they navigate year one without Tony Vitello.
The entire pitching staff should win a weekly SEC award. They held Mississippi State to just nine runs on the weekend and struck out 32 Bulldog batters.
If Tennessee would have just gone 3-3 in these games they would be 10-5 in SEC play.
