The offense punched back a little bit on Tuesday.
The media was allowed to watch a little over an hour of LSU’s Tuesday practice. We got eyes on some 11-on-11, some shot yardage work, goal line reps, a special teams period, some one-on-ones as well as some 7-on-7.
On Saturday, the defense really carried the day. Tuesday’s battle was more evenly matched.
11-on-11
Let’s start with the team period. It didn’t start well for the offense.
- Winnie Watkins dropped a WR screen
- Another screen to Watkins went for a tackle for loss
- Husan Longstreet, working with the ones, rolled and heaved an INT
The offense responded during a short yardage, goal line period.
- Dilin Jones hit a nice run up the middle for five to 10 yards (no tackling)
- Harlem Berry broke free on another inside run. The interior OL opened up a pair of nice holes on those two plays
- The next snap was playaction, and Jackson Harris got behind the defense for a long touchdown from Landen Clark
- Then Jones finished the sequence with another well-blocked run
The second groups then came on (lots of rotation through the period)
- Direct snap to freshman DT Deuce Geralds for a short gain. Geralds and Zach Weeks took reps in the jumbo package.
- Longstreet pulled a read-option and ran around left end. He has some wheels.
- False start
- Stacy Gage was swallowed up by Dominick McKinley
- Quick screen to Jayce Brown for five yards
- Over route to Malik Elzy for 20 yards, but it may have been a sack by Dylan Carpenter in live action.
- Zach Weeks made a tackle for loss.
New group, call it threes.
- Caden Durham short run.
- Gage for a short run up the middle.
- Rod Gainey for five yards off left tackle.
- Swing pass to Tyree Holloway that was stopped at the line.
- Toss to Durham. Emari Peterson stopped it behind the line.
- Gainey stopped for a TFL by Jaiden Braker
- Mason Dossett intercepted Emile Picarella
In the short yardage period, we saw a few direct snaps to running backs Dilin Jones and Stacy Gage. We saw Gage score three times from near the goalline. Jones also punched one in.
I watched some individual pass rush drills between the OL and DL. I bolded the more significant reps
- Weston Davis beat Dylan Carpenter
- Weston Davis beat Jordan Ross
- Darrin Strey and Malik Blocton split two reps
- William Satterwhite and Shone Washington split two reps
- Jordan Seaton dominated two reps with Dylan Carpenter
- Damien Shanklin bulled Devin Harper to the ground
- Deuce Geralds also beat Devin Harper
- Harper bounced back and won two reps with Jaylen Brown
- Richard Anderson won a bull rush on Bo Bordelon who had a great 11-on-11 period earlier.
- Brysten Martinez had two good reps versus Damien Shanklin
WR/DB one-on-ones
- Tre Wilson beat Ja’Keem Jackson in a battle of former Gators
- Faheem Delane interfered against Nau’Jour Granger
- Malik Elzy beat Michael Turner deep
- Jayce Brown torched Delane on a double move
- Jabari Mack beat PJ Woodland on a deep ball
- Delane had a pass break up on Jayce Brown
- Woodland had a great breakup on Jackson Harris on a slant
- Havon Finney did the same against Corey Barber in a matchup of freshmen
- Jackson Harris beat Woodland on a double move deep
- Those two matched up on the final rep, and Woodland had great sideline coverage. Harris caught it up high but was out of bounds.
- Roman Mothershed caught a back should ball on Finney
RETURN MEN
In the special teams period, they worked on punts and kickoffs simultaneously on adjacent fields.
Punt Returners: Jabari Mack, Jayce Brown, Winnie Watkins, Dilin Jones, Tre Wilson and Tyree Holloway.
Wilson muffed three straight punts.
Kick Returners: Stacy Gage, Caden Durham, Harlem Berry and Corey Barber
7 v 7
The first and second units each got two series of six plays. Longrstreet guided the first team with Landen Clark taking reps with the twos. Longstreet was 8/10 with a deep touchdown to Jayce Brown over DJ Pickett and a catch-and-run score by Roman Mothershed on a slant route. Tre Wilson also had a few nice grabs.
Clark was 9/12 in his reps and hand an intercepion boucne off Zach Weeks’s hands. Malachi Thomas had a leaping grab over Aiden Hall.
FINAL TEAM PERIOD
- Harlem Berry rush for short yardage
- Clark rolled out and fired for a touchdown to Jayce Brown
- Check down to Dilin Jones for big yardage
- Jones rush for very little
- Clark QB draw for little
- Clark picked by a dropping DE Jordan Ross in coverage.
- Huson Longstreet to JD LaFluer for a short gain.
- JC Anderson in traffic for a contested TD catch.
- Quick pass to Jackson Harris
- JD LaFluer for a short gain.
- Run by Longstreet called back for holding.
LAGINAPPE
- Sam Leavitt was back at practice and dressed but didn’t participate. Longstreet, Clark and Picarella continue to take all the reps. Leavitt does stand behind the drills with the coaches, but he didn’t do anything of note on Tuesday.
- With Aidan Anding out, the second secondary on Tuesday started with Michael Turner Jr. and Ja’Keem Jackson out wide and Charles Ross (LB) and Jhase Thomas working in the slot/STAR. Faheem Delane was deep, and Thomas joined him at times.
- The tempo really picked up in 11-on-11 Tuesday. They’re ahead of where they were three weeks ago.
