We got our final look at the Tigers this spring on a gorgeous Thursday morning on The Ponderosa.
The team shed the shoulder pads and just donned helmets for a light contact workout.
ATTENDANCE REPORT
Malik Blocton was shaken up on Tuesday and was not at practice Thursday morning. William Satterwhite was still absent, as were Tre Brown and Soloman Thomas. None of that is new.
Tamarcus Cooley and Whit Weeks were involved again, and both participated fully in 11-on-11. Cooley was even able to go 11-on-11 as spring is coming to a close.
DIME D
When the defense went to Dime for the “Quick Six” period, Deuce Geralds was the only down lineman in the formation. Jordan Ross and Princewill Umanmielen stood up on the edges with Davhon Keys and TJ Dottery in the middle of the field.
The secondary was Ja’Keem Jackson and DJ Pickett on the outside with PJ Woodland in the slot. Ty Benefield roamed free. Dashawn Spears and Cooley crept toward the line of scrimmage.
QUICK SIX
Huson Longstreet piloted the first group the vast majority of the time I was out there. He was the signal caller for Quick Six.
- Jordan Ross had a sack off the left side of the offensive line
- Trey’Dez Green caught a crossing route
- Jayce Brown caught an out route
- Phillip Wright made a catch over the middle and split the safeties for a touchdown, perhaps the first we’ve seen in that period all spring
- Jackson Harris caught a two-point play where he crossed the face of Ty Benefield on a slant. Probably would have been pass interference, but Harris made the catch.
1-on-1s
I took a good look at the WR/DB 1-on-1s Thursday. The drill is heavily skewed toward the offense, but the defense held its own. There were some standout reps.
- Jayce Brown roasted Ty Benefield on a double move for a big play
- Ja’Keem Jackson picked off a pass intended for Malik Elzy
- Brown blew by Faheem Delane for a deep ball touchdown
- PJ Woodland broke up a pass intended for Phillip Wright
- Havon Finney ran stride for stride with Roman Mothershed
- Jackson Harris really routed DJ Pickett up
- Tre Wilson blew by Michael Turner
- Malik Elzy had a TD over Ja’Keem Jackson
Some thoughts: LSU’s most sudden wide receivers are Jayce Brown and Tre Wilson. Those two are almost impossible to stick 1-on-1 with no help anywhere once they separate at the line of scrimmage. Winnie Watkins, Jackson Harris and Phillip Wright have had really good springs and have their strengths. Brown and Wilson are the quickest of the bunch.
11-on-11 Inside Run
The only period I saw where Landen Clark worked with the ones was in this 11-on-11 period. He kept for a 60-yard touchdown run up the middle.
Longstreet hit Jackson Harris for a big touchdown on a slant.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Most of the same suspect were back at punt returner– Jayce Brown, Tre Wilson, Winnie Watkins, Dilin Jones and Jabari Mack. Of note, Wilson muffed another punt. He’s done that four or five times in media availability. That’s a shame because of how dynamic he is in space.
7-on-7
Longstreet worked with the ones during 7-on-7. Clark was with the 2s. Notable reps included:
- Longstreet to Phillip Wright over the middle for a nice chunk
- Tre Wilson beat DJ Pickett on a slant for a touchdown
- Davhon Keys, working with the twos, had a great PBU on a route over the middle
- Malik Ely got loose on a corner route for a score
- In the red zone, Tamarcus Cooley had a great PBU on a corner route intended for Winnie Watkins
- Harlem Berry caught a touchdown in the flat
- Faheem Delane interferred with Tre Wilson on the two point try. Even Blake Baker called it.
- Jackson Harris was shaken up on a broken up pass in the back of the end zone. Zach Weeks made the play
11-on-11 Team
- Malik Elzy was lost by the defense on a bust. He made a catch down field and took off. PJ Woodland ran him down and stripped the ball free for a fumble that the defense recovered.
- The ones went to a jumbo offensive set featuring Zach Grace and Malachi Thomas blocking with Elzy at WR
- Dylan Carpenter had a sack working with the second team. He’s had a good spring.
- They went to a two-point conversion drill, and the defense stopped all six tries, three with the first team and three with the seocnd.
- Trey’Dez Green was triple covered on a jump ball. Jayce Brown’s reverse was blown up by Ty Benefield. Longstreet made a bad decision rolling right and fired back across the field. Dashawn Spears could have picked it off, but his back was turned.
- Faheem Delane broke up a pass intended for Corey Barber.
- Dylan Carpenter swatted a pass down.
- A Clark QB draw was stuffed.
