Postseason play begins this month, and the eight weekend series in conference play had a postseason feel to it. Four of the eight series were between ranked opponents and several more had postseason implications. Here’s our SEC baseball weekend recap.
That’s the LSU we were hoping to see
South Carolina has been the slump buster for a lot of SEC teams over the last two seasons. This weekend they came to Baton Rouge with a one game lead over LSU. They were facing an LSU team that had lost nine straight games in conference play.
LSU hasn’t played a lot of winning baseball this season. Their pitching staff and defense give up more free bases than anyone else in the conference, and little things like getting their starters deep into games has been almost non-existent. That changed this weekend.
LSU starting pitching was fantastic, and William Schmidt had arguably his best outing of the season. Tiger pitchers gave up four runs in three games and after a first inning home run on Saturday night, held the Gamecocks to no hits for seven innings.
The offense has turned it around too with the freshman and underclassmen spearheading the resurgence. Omar Serna has been incredible and extended his hitting streak to 11 games on Sunday.
Is it too late for the Tigers? We don’t know, but if they can win next weekend in Athens then look out because taking two of three on the road from SEC leading Georgia would certainly go a long way in their RPI and resume.

Vandy Streak in Danger
Vanderbilt is another blue blood that has really struggled this season. The Commodores have been more inconsistent than Chick-Fil-A cows’ literacy scores.
Heading into the weekend they were projected to be one of the last four teams in the NCAA tournament. They were swept by Alabama for the first time in over 15 years.
The Commodores are in the midst of a 19 year postseason streak that is the longest active streak in the SEC. Vanderbilt has been hampered by injuries for most of the season, but that’s not their only source of struggle. They currently have a 5.33 team ERA which is second worst in the league only to lowly Missouri.
The good news for Vanderbilt is that despite losing three straight this weekend they close with the two worst teams in the league in Missouri and South Carolina. They’re currently at 10-14 in league play and the magic number is usually at 13 for conference wins to punch a postseason ticket. They’ll probably need at least 14 to 15 with those remaining opponents if they want to make it.
Alabama got themselves a third sweep in SEC play this season adding Vandy to Florida, and Auburn. That should go a long way with their postseason RPI and seeding.
Going yard in the first inning the day after a walk-off bomb has to feel pretty damn good.

Auburn makes a statement
I’ve always said that Texas A&M is a cult, and Auburn is basically just Diet Texas A&M. Those two met in College Station in the midst of one of the other biggest cults in current pop/sports culture right now, the Savannah Bananas.
A lot was made before the weekend about Auburn’s absurdly difficult final three series to close out the regular season. That stretch began with A&M and will be followed up with Georgia and Mississippi State.
Auburn went to College Station to begin the gulag and made a statement by winning two of three from a Texas A&M team that had won seven of their last eight in conference play. It was Auburn’s fifth straight SEC series win.
The Tigers’ pitching was electric as always, but their bats were the real story, breaking out for an 18 run onslaught in game two. They have allowed more than five runs just one time in their last 17 games. To do that in the metal bat era with this level of offense we currently have in college baseball is insane. It was a great start to the final stretch of their season.

Texas-Mississippi State deserves a 7 Game Series
Texas and Mississippi State faced off in one of the best series we’ve seen all year as far. Both these teams should be in Omaha. No one was hotter than Mississippi State coming into this weekend, but that didn’t stop Texas from winning the series that I personally wish was a best of seven.
After splitting the first two games, Sunday saw Texas give Mississippi State a dose of their own medicine. After last weekend’s sweep over LSU where State came back from at least three runs to win in all three games, Texas throttled the Bulldogs in game three despite falling behind 5-0 in the first.
What was most impressive from Texas was how well they kept Mississippi State’s stud third baseman Ace Reese in check all weekend. The Longhorn pitching staff held him to a 1-for-10 weekend in Austin. Still, both these teams remain at the top of the pecking order in the conference and are in line to host Regionals and Super Regionals this postseason.
