The New Orleans Saints hosted their annual Hall of Fame Celebrity Goal Classic on Monday. During which, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Kellen Moore updated the local media on several outstanding topics including the futures of established stars, joint practices and the outlook for the rookie class.
Here are some of the key takeaways, starting with updates on beloved Saints figures.
Loomis on Running Back Alvin Kamara
The Saints’ conversations around Kamara have been typically focused on roster evaluation and decision-making. Loomis gave the most up-front update that’s been shared so far. He made it clear that the team is actively evaluating his spot on the roster, how “resource management” factors into the equation and even a slight reference to a timeline.
“We’re just just trying to see how he’s going to fit in our roster,” Loomis said clearly. “Obviously, there’s a resource management element to it, and we’ll get to that over the next week or two.”
While the “week or two” timeline is certainly nothing to hold the team to, it is clear that the Saints would like to resolve this situation sooner than later. When asked if “resource management” specifically meant Kamara’s contract, Loomis delivered additional clarification.
“Certainly, yeah,” he said.”It’s about how we manage our cap, and we’ll get to that.”
Piece the context together, that may mean that the Saints are evaluating Kamara’s $10.5 million cap hit in 2026 against what his role may look like after the addition of running back Travis Etienne Jr. who signed a four-year, $48 million deal this offseason. One can safely assume that the Saints, like any organization, would want the payment to be commensurate to the role Kamara would fill in the offense.
However, the contract that stands has already been agreed to. Meaning Kamara doesn’t have to make that concession if he chooses not to. That would be well within his logical options. The decision made after that hypothetical stalemate is where things become unpredictable and, perhaps, a reality both sides would like to avoid.
The Saints have a contract offer in place for Defensive End Cameron Jordan
Loomis shared that the Saints have indeed made a contract offer to Jordan, who currently remains a free agent as OTAs near. A contract, however, isn’t the only piece to what is a complicated equation that could lead to the 15-year vet’s return or departure. Role and opportunity have long been a part of Jordan’s looming decision.
On the other hand, no deal has been offered to Quarterback Taysom Hill
While Jordan has a contract offer to mull, Hill does not. However, the versatile playmaker also hasn’t made the decision to sign elsewhere, nor has he publicly spoken about his considerations. Which naturally leads many to wonder if retirement is a possibility.
The Hill gameplan wasn’t necessarily productive for the Saints outside of an outstanding performance against the New York Jets, which again etched Hill’s name into another NFL record. So, the end of his tenure in New Orleans wouldn’t be a total surprise. From afar, and increasingly so, the question feels like it’s more about whether or not Hill returns to the game at all, rather than just about his potential return to the Crescent City.
“I think that’s more discussion that Taysom and I probably have to have,” Loomis said when asked if there was a plan to offer Hill a new deal.
Moore on joint practices
The Saints have made it a habit to venture to the West Coast for some collection of training camp practices in recent years. It sounds like that will continue. New Orleans has been awaiting the results of the preseason schedule release to see which clubs are on the docket that could provide joint practice opportunities.
Luckily, presumably at least, for the team, two familiar opponents are on the schedule and the Saints are interested in holding joint practices with multiple teams this offseason.
“The goal would be to do some joint practices out there,” Moore said about the west coast. “Finalizing some of those opportunities there, but yeah, our goal is trying to get a few more joint practices this year. Which I think will benefit our team.”
New Orleans is set to travel to Inglewood, California this preseason to take on the Los Angeles Rams, setting the Saints up for a common joint practice opponent. The two teams held joint sessions just last year.
Moore responded with a simple “Yes,” when asked if multiple teams were in the plans. New Orleans will host the Jacksonville Jaguars to open the exhibition series and will close it out at the Dallas Cowboys. New Orleans and Jacksonville faced off in last year’s preseason, making hosting them a possibility for more competitive practices.
Key rookies will continue to ramp up
The Saints’ top two selections, first round wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and second round defensive tackle Christen Miller were both limited in their rookie minicamp participation. It won’t be surprising to see them continue to build up their involvement throughout the offseason ahead of training camp.
“I mean, that’s next week, so we’ll just see where they’re at,” Moore said of both players being full-go for OTAs. “I think all these rookies, we’re kind of trying to build them up. I think the main thing is phase three (of the offseason) is really a ramp up into training camp, so that’s the main focus. We’ll see where they’re at here in the next few days.”
