The SEC was loaded a season ago with five teams making the College Football Playoff. This year should be even better with top end talent littering potentially playoff bound rosters across the league.
Here’s an early look at which teams have the best position units on defense in the SEC heading into the 2026 season.
Defensive Line: Texas
This may be the most loaded position unit across the entire conference on either side of the ball. There are a bevy of teams with elite level defensive lines in the league.
Georgia should be close to recapturing the dominance it showed along the defensive line in 2021 and 2022. South Carolina may have the most underrated defensive front not just in the SEC, but in the entire country. LSU’s unit is incredibly young, but it also boasts one of the highest ceilings in the conference.
The answer however, is Texas. They return the conference leader in sacks off the edge in Colin Simmons. They also brought in a mammoth 6-foot-5, 378 pound transfer to plug the middle in Ian Geffrard.
Texas finished last season with 41 sacks, which was third best in the SEC and they return a majority of the talent from last year’s unit. Hero Kanu is another name to watch, but in a long line of really good defensive fronts in the SEC this year, Texas is the clear leader.
Honorable Mention: South Carolina, Georgia, and LSU
Linebackers: LSU
This is perhaps the easiest decision of any position unit.
The Tigers return All-American caliber LB Whit Weeks for another year. Weeks is coming off an injury, but is ready for the season. The Tigers pair him with the SEC’s leading tackler from a season ago, TJ Dottery.
The Tigers will be in a 4-2-5 base defense and having those two elite defenders in the middle of the defense is about as good as you can get. If that’s not enough, Davhon Keys, LSU’s leading tackler and the SEC’s second leading tackler from a season ago, should see plenty of playing time.
There are some other really good units in the league, as well. Georgia will always have a top 3-5 linebacking unit it seems, and his year will be no different. Quintavious Johnson could be one of the biggest breakout players of the year.
Then, there’s Oklahoma who returns two three year starters in Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke.
Lastly, there’s South Carolina who, just like their defensive line, has one of the more underrated units in the league. They also run a 4-2-5 flex nickel defense that returns the top three returning players at the position who should all provide a ton of production and leadership similar to their 2024 unit.
Honorable Mention: Georgia, Oklahoma, and South Carolina
Secondary: Alabama
For this breakdown we can take a trip back to the late 2010s and early 2020s because it’s strictly a debate between Georgia and Alabama.
The answer is Alabama, though. The Tide returns three starters from a unit that led the SEC in passing yards allowed with less than 170 ypg. The lone new starter is former five-star Dijon Lee, who took over the starting job late last season, making five starts after replacing incumbent Domani Jackson.
Behind Alabama are two of its longest standing rivals, LSU and Georgia.
Georgia boasts two of the best players at their positions in the country with KJ Bolden at safety and Ellis Robinson IV at corner. Down in Baton Rouge, LSU should return to its DBU form under Corey Raymond with budding star Ty Benefield at safety, former five-star DJ Pickett at corner and two returning starters.
