Summer Baseball Update: Former Tigers move on, future Tigers are all-stars

The past has passed. The future is shining.

Santiago Garcia and Gavin Guidry did enough to become MLB Draft selections. Garcia went in the 12th round to Toronto. Guidry was taken by the Mets in the 16th. Those two will move on to professional baseball as LSU turns its bullpen over.

Reagan Ricken made his three starts. He’s completed his competitive summer action.

Also, William Patrick and Jack Ruckert are done for the summer leaving just a few future tigers left toiling on Cape Cod. The country’s premier summer league will hold its all-star game this weekend. Bino Watters and Dawson Park will play.

Jay Johnson said on my radio show Thursday that he made a stop though Cape Cod in the middle of the week and will head out to Sacramento on Friday to watch Tommy White’s MLB debut with Gage Jump on the mound and Dylan Crews patrolling centerfield for the opposition.

Here’s an update on how things are going on The Cape.

  • Dawson Park (Cotuit Kettleers) 18-for-63 (.286), 4 2B, 3B, 5 RBI, 6 SB, 11 BB, 16 K
  • Bino Watters (Chatham Anglers) 26-for-91 (.286 BA), 5 2B, HR, 18 RBI, 7 SB, 12 BB, 25 K, .783 OPS
  • Jason Wachs (Wareham Gatemen) 15-for-72 (.208), 3 2B, HR, 6 RBI, 6 SB, 13 BB, 21 K, .360 OBP
  • Cade Kurland (Harwich Mariners) 19-for-73 (.260 BA), 4 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 8 SB, 7 BB, 15 K, .365 OBP

Park has made a couple of errors at second base, but he’s clean in 41 chances on the left side of the infield. Johnson remarked to me on Thursday how impressed he’s been with Park’s glove. His batting average jumping to .286 in a wooden bat league against elite arms is very, very positive for LSU.

It was a tough offensive week for Watters who is still putting together a really good summer. I’m encouraged by the seven stolen bases.

Wachs is getting on base at a .360 clip which is solid on Cape Cod. He’s played 20 games in centerfield, which is another indication that he’s going to get a long look there in fall ball. He only played 13 games there at Tulane with 38 starts coming in right.

Kurland got nine hits this week and raised his summer batting average nearly 60 points. He had four doubles and a homer, which came while Johnson was present. Now his Cape Cod on base is up to .365. He does not have an error in 67 chances at second base.

This has been a really encouraging summer for the Tiger transfers. That continued this week and will with the Cape Cod League All-Star Game on Saturday.
