Coaches will always find room for improvement.
Even after scoring 51 unanswered points on Clemson, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin saw sore spots on LSU’s offensive line.
“I think (the) offensive line, we can do some things better in there,” Kiffin said. “We got beat a few times on a few things, and when you have a really elusive quarterback and you have a really good running back, which we’ve had that combination for a while now, that makes up for some things.”
Quarterback Sam Leavitt used his legs effectively for a career-high 113 rushing yards. He wasn’t dropped for a sack.
Pro Football Focus graded left guard Bo Bordelon at just a 37.7 in pass protection. He allowed a pair of hurries. Aliou Bah on the right side graded 59.7 overall.
Leavitt’s surgically repaired foot was no issue. The running backs, especially Dilin Jones, had little issue finding holes.
Still, Kiffin found teaching moments on tape.
“We had over 300 yards rushing. We had no sacks, but at the same time, Sam got us out of trouble a couple times,” Kiffin said. “You’ve got to be careful with that stat and thinking, ‘Oh, we played great up there.’ So, we did some really good things, but we’ve got to improve. We’ve got to play better at the guard spot if we’re going to continue to improve and play really consistent.”
LSU ran 94 plays and only allowed two tackles for loss. To Kiffin’s point, the stat sheet suggests the offensive line held up snap to snap. Pro Football Focus dinged Bordelon, Bah and left tackle Jordan Seaton all with a pair of quarterback hurries.
Right tackle Weston Davis graded at 58.4 at right tackle where he struggled last year. Center Braelin Moore was the bright spot at center, and 84.3 grade in pass protection.
The Tigers step out of conference again on Saturday as Louisiana Tech makes the trip down from Ruston.
