New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has proven much about his potential to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. But there are still elements that must be shown for him to solidify his claim to that title.
One such signature moment awaits him in Baltimore this weekend as the Saints travel to take on the Ravens.
Shough’s shown such traits.
His clutch play, when his team trails, his ability to adjust and respond to pressure, his unique arm talent and leadership acumen have all contributed to wins. It’s also contributed to optimism in New Orleans since becoming the team’s starting quarterback midway during the team’s Week 8 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
From that time, the team has been all-in on Shough. The Saints have built around him through free agency and the draft, and has continued to invest in his development by making him the clear, obvious and bona fide starter throughout the 2026 offseason.
But at the time of each of his five career victories, the opposition has been manageable.
Entering each of his wins, Shough faced teams with records of 5-4, 7-5, 7-6, 3-11 and 3-12. He’s proven he can beat winning teams, but he hasn’t yet had much opportunity to face legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
Last season, the only true championship caliber team he faced was the Los Angeles Rams in his first career start. That game ended in a 34-10 blowout loss when nothing seemingly would go right for New Orleans in the quarterback’s debut as a starter.
Last week, after facing a 21-0 deficit against the Detroit Lions, (a team many expect to win their division in 2026) Shough helped to lead the charge to close that scoring gap, force overtime and helped position the team for two tries to win the game.
In Week 2, the Saints will face a true contender, not just for their division, but for the league’s championship trophy.
The test will be a rare one for Shough and his club, providing a measuring stick unlike any that the team has experienced since its matchup with the Rams last season.
While a win may not be the result leaving Baltimore, a faster start than last week’s and another resilient, productive display could be the next leap in the quarterback’s game.
With optimism surrounding top wide receiver Chris Olave and his availability, the return of running back Alvin Kamara, and a host of skill position contributors ready to go, the contest against the Ravens could be Shough’s next, and most important, proving ground.
