Dashawn Spears’s season is over.
The junior STAR tore his ACL on Saturday night at Ole Miss according to a report from Matt Zenitz of 247sports. He left the game and was on crutches for the second half.
Spears, a Denham Springs product, has played in 29 games for LSU with seven career starts. Three of those came this year when he emerged as LSU’s STAR playing around the line of scrimmage and in the slot.
So far this season, Spears has made seven tackles, tallied a sack and a pass break up.
LSU turned to CJ Jimcoily and Jhase Thomas is Spears’s absence on Saturday. LSU football coach Lane Kiffin declined to elaborate on the defense’s plans without Spears moving forward, only saying that Spears was “elite” and that he would be difficult to replace.
Kiffin also announced that second-year wide receiver Phillip Wright will miss the rest of the year. He was injured against Louisiana Tech and ruled out for the Ole Miss game. Wright was the primary kickoff returner and had a touchdown catch in the blowout win over Clemson.
