LSU’s baseball program continues to replenish its foundation by reaching for the top prospects in the Class of 2028.
The No. 2 prospect – according to Baseball America – shortstop Derek Vazquez of Charlotte, N.C. committed to coach Jay Johnson on Saturday.
The 6-foot-2, 188-pound prospect is regarded as a highly rated shortstop with potential first-round MLB potential because of his lethal left-handed bat, bat speed and athleticism.
Vazquez has also shown the ability to play second and third base. He batted .403 with 36 runs scored, six homers and 22 RBIs during his sophomore season.
He also had a .920 fielding percentage and helped Charlotte Christian (28-7) to the NCISAA Class 4A state championship, taking two of three games from Metrolina Christian Academy.
Vasquez has also received invitations to participate in the U.S. National Baseball Development Program each of the past two years.
He’s part of a growing Class of ’28 commitments that has 1B/LHP Luke Esquivel of Grapevine, Texas, OF/RHP Dexter McCleon of Buford, Ga., pitcher Tanner Conley of Fontainebleau High in Mandeville and catcher Maxwell Ribes of Baton Rouge-Episcopal.
