Derek Carr has announced his retirement.

““Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” said Carr. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”
The Saints announced that Carr suffered a labral tear and had “significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.” Carr is believed to have suffered the shoulder injury at the same time he suffered a left hand injury and a concussion in December against the New York Giants.
In the weeks since the injury was first reported, both Carr and the Saints have been slow to release details surrounding the injury.
The Saints selected Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of last month’s draft. It was the highest pick the Saints have used on a quarterback since taking Archie Manning second overall in 1979.
Carr played 11 NFL seasons, the last two in New Orleans. He was drafted in the second round by the Raiders in 2014 and was selected to four Pro Bowls.
During his two seasons in New Orleans, Carr led the team to a 14-13 record in 27 starts. He missed seven games in 2024.
