It feels like these types of weekends rarely live up to the hype. This one did. From start to finish the slate lived up to the hype. With the games also came reactions, and more importantly, came the overreactions. Here are three of the biggest overreactions from the SEC games this weekend.
1. If Texas gets any more confusing about who they are, 28-year-old me may try and date them
Texas is the most underwhelming team with the best resumé I’ve seen in forever. The Longhorns once again beat a ranked opponent, and they once again did it on the road to prove everyone wrong. This time they traveled to Columbia, Missouri and knocked off a Top 20 team that became the trendiest upset pick in the country, it seemed like.
Regardless of how we feel about the officiating in that game, it was a tremendous win for Texas. It was also their fourth ranked win of the season, and now they’ll head to Baton Rouge with a chance to finish off an LSU team that is staggering to the finish line of the season without a single ranked win under their belt. Texas feels like the least deserving No. 7 ranked team we’ve seen in the SEC at this point of the season in years. Halloween is over, but they are basically cosplaying as 2024 Indiana from a few years ago.
Maybe that’s a stretch because this Texas team actually does have the talent to win it all. Plus, they have three more ranked wins than that team had, and have done so in just nine games. However, it feels like no one is scared of having to face them right now. That’s probably unfair considering how incredible this resume is on paper.
2. The committee was still wrong about Alabama, but not as much as everyone else
I don’t care what happened on the field today. Judging this Alabama team based on what they put on the field prior to their dominating win against LSU still didn’t warrant being a Top 5 team in the College Football Playoff rankings. That’s an objectively true statement considering what they had done coming in. Let’s also be clear, there’s no part of any of us that should ever give Hunter Yurachek credit for literally anything, let alone being sound in his decisions when it comes to football teams and programs.
That being said…
They apparently weren’t wrong.
In the most Groundhog Day thing imaginable, Alabama went to Tiger Stadium and for the seventh time in their last nine trips, left with a win. We probably should’ve seen that coming considering it’s exactly what’s happened in 14 of the last 16 games between the two. This one had to be especially sweet for Alabama and Kalen DeBoer. The volume of naysayers from around the country was louder than ever. The idea that Alabama couldn’t beat a team as good as LSU, despite LSU not having a single win over a ranked opponent this season, proved to be silly. Shocking, but still silly. DeBoer is now 3-0 against LSU and has won those three games by 58 combined points.
3. Georgia is the scariest team in the country
Listen, this is not meant to be negative about Georgia’s offense. God knows Mike Bobo gets enough unfair criticism from his own fanbase. But, Georgia just beat a Top 10 team by 35 points. On the road. And, they did so with their quarterback going just 9-of-15 through the air.
You can do that when nearly half (four) of those nine completions went for touchdowns.
Georgia is bludgeoning teams once again, and they’re doing it with their passing game playing at a C Grade. Last Saturday they beat a Top 25 Florida team like a drum despite their quarterback competing 13-of-23 passes for just 101 yards. This week they got revenge on Ole Miss despite their quarterback being nearly a non-factor for most of the game.
That’s how good Georgia is. They can not only beat despite their offense being seemingly underwhelming. They can absolutely obliterate teams without their offense firing on anything remotely close to all cylinders.
