The interior of the New Orleans Saints’ offensive line is a position group that benefits both from new talent and returning talent getting another year in the team’s new offense.
With the offseason additions of both veteran David Edwards and fourth-round draft selection Jeremiah Wright, the guard spot has a whole new influx of potential.
Meanwhile, new years for returning guards and interior blockers will open up new opportunities thanks to the players’ familiarity with the system. Those new chances to expand their impact could prove fruitful for a few versatile options.
Interior Offensive Line – 6 (22)
- Erik McCoy (C)
- Cesar Ruiz (RG)
- David Edwards (LG)
- Dillon Radunz
- Torricelli Simpkins III
- Jeremiah Wright
The starting lineup is easy to project, especially with the addition of Edwards. It’s the depth that brings the most intrigue and opportunity for competition.
Simpkins has led the way so far as the team’s backup center behind McCoy. He holds his spot as the immediate backup at the position, though Ruiz can swing into that role as well after playing there in college.
Radunz was one of the more important depth returns this offseason. He fits head coach Kellen Moore’s offense well as a good mover that plays with power. He also has tackle versatility, thus can help cover multiple areas across the line.
Wright brings in a bona fide immediate backup for the guard roles, most immediately on the right side. But as he develops, he’ll be hard to keep off the field. He’s violent and physical, moves well in the wide zone game and has caught the attention of coaches for his high football IQ.
Guard William Sherman is the odd-man out, but could easily retain a role on the team’s practice squad. He too can handle snaps at both guard and center, making him a valuable asset to keep around.
